A sport called dance
Kayla wrote an essay about how dance is one of the hardest sports, though she was unpleasantly surprised on the corrections her teacher gave her. “Dance is not a sport, you should write about soccer,” she wrote. Kayla was infuriated that her teacher would say that, especially because she was completely and utterly wrong. There are many sports and dance is one of them. One reason dance is a sport is because it is a great workout. Not just a great one, but also an intense and effective one. The average amount of dancing for a regular dancer per day is 2-5 hours. Regardless of how long you dance, dancing for just an hour is a huge workout, both mind and body. Dance is a workout because you are dancing and doing cardio non-stop. Also when a girl gets to a certain point in her ballet career, where she qualifies for pointe, she will dance on her toes, balancing all of her body’s weight on her few toes. Dance builds muscles that strengthen your body, without getting the bulky look. They keep you looking long and lean, and strong. Some people think dance isn't a sport because there's no competition. Though dance competitions aren't televised like baseball, and football, there are many dance competitions. The TV show, Dance Moms, shows how competitive this sport is. Though dance doesn't involve physical contact, it has different kinds of competitions where people all around the world come to show off their talent, and compete with other dancers their age. Some known dance competitions are the Prix De Lausanne, a known ballet competition, the West Coast Dance Explosion, KAR, Celebrity, and Showstoppers. |
Dance isn't only competitive in competitions, but in daily classes as well, everyone competing for the teacher’s attention, yearning to have the best turnout, performance, and musicality. This sport is one of the hardest to make it professionally; most ballerinas are genetically engineered to have the perfect turnout, and flexibility. Not all dancers have to be naturally gifted, but it sure makes it easier. As for the many who aren't "naturals" they have to work twice as hard to even be considered as competition to the "naturals", which is one of the reasons that makes this sport so competitive.
You may think that since there's no physical contact in dance, that it’s not a sport. Yes, it true that there is no physical contact competition in dance. However swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball have no physical contact yet they are recognized as sports, and are even in the Olympics competing for our Country. Dance is a sport and it should be recognized along with all others. Kayla talked with her teacher for about an hour after school, trying to convince her that she was right. Finally her teacher came to realize that she was wrong, and dance is a sport. She re-corrected Kayla’s paper and gave her extra credit for sticking up for what she believes in. |
